Percy Marmont was born in London in 1883. Before achieving success on the screen he had a brilliant stage career with Cyril Maude, Sir Herbert Tree, Sir George Alexander, Granville Barker, Charles Frohman and David Belasco. He went to America in 1918 and made films for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, First National, Universal, Fox, National (Berlin) and other film companies.

One of his most notable triumphs in silent films was his portrayal of Mark Sabre in “If Winter Comes”, which was followed by important rôles in many other big films both in England and in America, including “The Light that Failed”, “Lord Jim”, “Shooting of Dan McGrew”, Aloma of the South Seas, Mantrap, “The Street of Forgotten Men”, “The Silver King”, and “Sir or Madam”. Played leading parts in the talking films “Warning”, “The Squeaker” (British Lion), “The Unwritten Law” and “Rich and Strange” (B.I.P.). It would be futile to attempt an appreciation of his art or an analysis of his methods within the limits of the available space. All it is possible to do here is to refer to one remarkable effect which he never falls to achieve in the sacrificial rôles for which he is generally cast. In some subtle way he manages to “put across” his own attractive personality through the character which he happens to be playing, with the result that the audience not only enjoy his performance but remember it for a long time as an interesting personal experience.

Seine ersten Erfolge errang er bei Cyril Maude, später arbeitete er mit Sir Herbert Tree, Sir George Alexander, Granville Barker, Charles Frohman und David Belasco. 1918 wurde er für den Film nach Amerika verpflichtet, wo er bei Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, First National u. a. Filmgesellschaften erfolgreich war.

Seine bedeutendste Rolle im stummen Film war die des Mark Sabre in „If Winter Comes”; weiter hatte er Sondererfolge zu verzeichnen in vielen englischen und amerikanischen Filmen, von denen hier nur einige genannt seien: „The Light that Failed”, „Lord Jim”, „Shooting of Dan McGrew”, Aloma of the South Seas, Mantrap, „The Street of Forgotten Men’“, „The Silver King”, „Sir or Madam” usw. Auch beim Tonfilm blieb das Glück ihm treu. Percy Marmont hatte tragende Rollen in „Warning”. „The Squeaker” (British Lion), „The Unwritten Law” und „Rich and Strange” (B.I.P.) und konnte auch auf diesem neuen Gebiet große Erfolge für sich buchen. Er gehört zu den Schauspielern von starker Persönlichkeit, die die Fähigkeit besitzen, ein Stückchen davon jeder Rolle, die sie spielen, aufzuprägen, sie dadurch dem Zuschauer menschlich nahezubringen und so jedes Stück über seine Bühnenwirksamkeit hinaus zu einem persönlichen Erlebnis zu machen.
